Featuring Bertie Blackman, Whitley, Jonathan Boulet, Pikelet and more!
In 2010 Ben Sherman return to present their annual live music love-in; the Ben Sherman Big British Sound. Following the huge success of the Big British Sound’s debut in Sydney last year, Ben Sherman have decided to take the show on the road, and will host the Big British Sound in Melbourne, as well as Sydney, for the first time this year.
What is the Ben Sherman Big British Sound exactly? Each year Ben Sherman selects a range of the best emerging artists in Australian independent music to come together and celebrate Ben Sherman’s British music heritage. Each band throws one or two covers into their set from British artists they are influenced by, or who they simply dig.
The result is a line up of Australia’s best up and coming musicians, and a chance for fans to capture one or two special moments of these artists in a new light.
The 2009 event saw some startling sets from artists including Tame Impala, Art vs Science, Little Red, Jack Ladder and The Seabellies. Tame Impala’s cover of ‘Remember Me’ was one of the more compelling moments of the night, the track making it into 2009’s Triple J Hottest 100.
Ben Sherman has been intrinsically involved with British music since its beginning in the 60’s. The brand has been synonymous with the sounds of punk, nu-wave and beyond with artists and bands including The Clash, New Order, Pulp, The Kinks, David Bowie, Kate Bush, Paul McCartney, Style Council, Morrisey and many more supporting the Ben Sherman brand on stage and in their everyday lives.
The Big British Sound is a chance for Ben Sherman to make a connection between its support of UK music past, and Australian music present.
This year’s events see an amazing array of talent including Bertie Blackman, Whitley, Jonathan Boulet, Fergus Brown, Pikelet, Big Scary, Deep Sea Arcade + DJs.

Bertie Blackman
Blending electronic influences with her signature vocal style and penchant for brutally honest lyrics in a modern exploration of pop music dubbing it herself as ‘dark pop’. Bertie delivers pop music with depth. Her inventive and honest lyrics have captured not only an ever growing Australian fanship but also a flaring interest in the UK. Read more
Whitley
This cheeky, charismatic 22-year-old exudes charm and quick wit. Yet his music and lyrics are that of an older soul, one with tales to tell. Whitley seamlessly blends organic acoustic flavours with electronic overtones creating songs with hushed, whimsical tales of love and loss. Read more
Jonathan Boulet
The phrase “jack of all, master of all” isn’t exactly one that gets bandied about, but is one that may well apply to the most recently inked player in the Modular clubhouse, Jonathan Boulet. A precociously inspired 21-year-old skate rat from Sydney’s northwest, Boulet makes a brand of ceremoniously uplifting, deeply colourful pop that sounds like something for which you’ve been searching but never thought you’d find. Piklet (Melbourne)
Evelyn Morris, aka Melbourne folk-psych wunderkind Pikelet sprang to life in 2006, named in tribute to the small pancakes (called pikelets in Australia) her mother used to whip up when money was scarce. Before Pikelet, Evelyn was a hardcore kid, a drummer with serious chops in various local bands such as Baseball and True Radical Miracle. Read more
Deep Sea Arcade (Sydney)
Sydney’s DEEP SEA ARCADE’s reverberated pop recalls The Kinks and The Zombies yet with a character and charm that is undeniably unique. Ethereal guitars and lyrical quirks will transport the listener to a dark, watery world of mystery and enchantment, and leave their heads swimming with unforgettable melodies. Read more
Fergus Brown (Sydney)
Sydney songwriter Fergus Brown’s melodic guitar-pop is reminiscent of The Shins, Bon Iver and Ben Kweller, but he is equally aligned with the lyrical peculiarities of artists such as Randy Newman, Jonathan Richman, and The Magnetic Fields. Read more
Big Scary (Melbourne)
Having originally planned on creating a full four-piece band, Tom and Joanna decided instead that creating a full-band sound with only the two of them would be much more challenging, and much more fun. They were forced to look beyond what was most comfortable to them, exploring various genres and experimenting with different instrument combinations. Read more
